Trader Joe's named best grocery store in US; Kroger to beat Whole Foods on organic, natural: Retail

Culinary website The Daily Meal recently conducted a national survey of 100 different grocery stores, including national and regional chains. Though some of the grocers that topped their list will be unfamiliar to Portland residents, Northwest staples Costco, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's took the top three spots. See the slideshow here.

Kroger, which owns Fred Meyer, was lower on the list at No. 11, but Business Insider reports that the huge grocery chain is expected to surpass Whole Foods Market within two years and become the nation's top seller of organic and natural food.

A modest bidding war has broken out among the retailers who hire from the bottom of the labor pool, buoyed in part by improving sales.
